Roughly 2.4 million households watched Wednesday night’s debate among the candidates on the recall ballot, about a quarter of those that had TV sets turned on, according to Nielsen Media ratings data released Thursday.
In the Greater Los Angeles area, an estimated 1.6 million viewers watched the debate, more than watched any of the televised debates between George W. Bush and Al Gore during the 2000 presidential election, according to Nielsen statistics.
The debate was televised on local stations KCBS-TV Channel 2, KNBC-TV Channel 4, KABC-TV Channel 7, KCAL-TV Channel 9, KTTV-TV Channel 11 and KCOP-TV Channel 13. KTLA-TV Channel 5 (which is owned by Tribune Co., owner of the Los Angeles Times), did not carry the debate.
In the San Francisco area, an estimated 975,000 viewers watched the debate broadcast on four stations, including KPIX-TV, the CBS-owned station. According to Nielsen data, an estimated 84,000 viewers watched the debate in San Diego, where only one station, XETV-TV, carried the entire debate live. In the Sacramento area, an estimated 433,000 viewers watched the debate on ABC affiliate KXTV-TV and NBC affiliate KCRA-TV.
