One U.S. soldier was killed and a second was wounded Tuesday when their vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device northeast of Baghdad, the U.S. Central Command said.

The soldiers, who were not immediately identified, were from the 3rd Corps Support Command. They were attacked along a supply route, the Central Command said on its Web site.

The slain soldier was the 287th U.S. service member to die in the Iraq war. A U.S. Army spokesman, Lt. Col. George Krivo, said before the soldier’s death that there had been 14 attacks on U.S. forces in 24 hours.

Late Tuesday, a car bomb went off in the northern city of Irbil outside an office used by U.S. military personnel, killing one Iraqi and wounding six Americans and 41 Iraqis.

Staff Sgt. Shane Slaughter, a military spokesman in Baghdad, said the six Americans were Defense Department personnel. He did not say whether they were military or civilian.

In another attack, three U.S. soldiers were wounded when their Humvee hit an explosive device near Fallouja, west of Baghdad. Two more soldiers were wounded in a separate attack near Ramadi, Krivo said.
