Truck Guards Shoot, Kill Alleged Robber
Two guards driving an armored truck shot and killed one of several men who forced the truck to stop on a Vernon street and tried to rob it, police said Monday.
The guards were driving west on 37th Street about 6:30 p.m. Sunday when two or three cars surrounded the Dunbar armored truck as it approached Alameda Street.
The truck was carrying a “large amount of cash,†said Vernon police Lt. James Rodino.
The guards were forced to stop just before Alameda, and exchanged gunfire with the suspects as they approached the truck.
The guards pulled away and headed south on Alameda, Rocino said,
They stopped at 38th Street.
The robbers caught up and boxed the truck in again. A second gun battle ensued and the guards shot one of the men, Rodino said.
The man, in his 30s, was pronounced dead at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center. The name of the dead man had not been released, pending notification of relatives.
Vernon and Los Angeles police and Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies searched the neighborhood but couldn’t find the other suspects, Rodino said.
Police said they don’t have a good description of the men, who were in their 20s or 30s, or their cars.
