I enjoyed your Outdoors section on climbing Mt. Whitney (“Why Whitney?,†Oct. 24). I first climbed it in 1957 with my son David, who was then 6. I noticed that you referenced “Climbing Mount Whitney,†co-authored by my brother Walt. I spend my time sailing now -- it takes less energy.

Your Mt. Whitney issue brought back a very happy memory of climbing the mountain in 1978 with my three sons. We chose to go in from Cedar Grove in Kings Canyon and had a glorious five days during which we became acclimated to the altitude. We saw few other hikers until we reached the peak trail. Our hike down to Whitney Portal on the unending switchbacks gave us renewed appreciation for the longer route up we had chosen. It was the trip of a lifetime, and one I will never forget.
