Detroit Wins With Help From Chelios
Chris Chelios became the 11th defenseman in NHL history to record 900 points, and Boyd Devereaux scored with 2:23 left to give the Detroit Red Wings a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues Saturday night at St. Louis.
With the game tied 1-1, Devereaux scored the winner from the slot on a centering pass from Mathieu Dandenault.
Detroit trailed, 1-0, late in the second period when Chelios took a shot from the right point that was blocked by Dallas Drake. The puck found its way to Brett Hull at the left point, and he whipped a quick shot past Chris Osgood.
The assist was the 723rd of Chelios’ career. Chelios has seven points this season on a goal and six assists.
With the win, the Red Wings moved into first place in the Central Division. They have 30 points, two more than St. Louis. The loss ended the Blues’ five-game home winning streak.
Washington 5, Columbus 3 -- Peter Bondra of the Capitals scored three goals at Columbus, Ohio, to move into fourth place on the NHL’s career scoring list for European-born players.
Bondra, from Ukraine, registered his 19th hat trick. The three goals broke a tie with Toronto’s Alexander Mogilny and pushed his overall total to 461.
The Capitals scored four times in less than 10 minutes of the second period -- and on just five shots.
Philadelphia 5, New York Islanders 1 -- The Flyers scored all five goals in the second period at Uniondale, N.Y., to extend their unbeaten streak to 12 games.
John LeClair scored a power-play goal 3:47 into the period to tie the score. Mark Recchi put Philadelphia in front 1:50 later, and Donald Brashear, Simon Gagne and Justin Williams followed to send the Islanders to their fifth straight loss.
Toronto 2, Ottawa 1 -- Bryan McCabe scored during a two-man advantage in the second period, and the Maple Leafs held on at Ottawa to win their fourth straight game.
McCabe beat Patrick Lalime with a shot from the point with Martin Havlat and Radek Bonk in the penalty box.
Atlanta 2, Tampa Bay 1 -- Vyacheslav Kozlov and J.P. Vigier scored third-period goals at Atlanta and the Thrashers took over first place in the Southeast Division.
The Lightning is winless in four games (0-2-2) and haven’t won in their last five trips to Philips Arena dating to March 2001.
Nashville 4, Buffalo 1 -- Vladimir Orszagh recorded his first three-goal game in the NHL and added an assist at Nashville, helping the Predators win their fourth game in a row.
The Predators, who have won eight of their last 10, moved two games above .500 (12-10-1-0) for the first time this late in a season in the expansion team’s six-year history.
Carolina 4, Pittsburgh 3 -- Radim Vrbata’s hat trick lifted the Hurricanes at Raleigh, N.C., Marty Murray scored the other goal in the second period.
The game was a matchup of struggling clubs in the 15-team Eastern Conference, with Carolina standing in 13th and Pittsburgh 14th. Each team had just two wins in its last 10 games and one in its last five.
Florida 1, Montreal 1 -- Viktor Kozlov scored with 1:11 left in the third period to give the Panthers the tie at Montreal. With defenseman Craig Rivet off for holding at 17:43, Kozlov scored his fifth goal of the season as Florida enjoyed a six-on-four advantage after pulling the goalie.
Vancouver 4, Calgary 4 -- Brendan Morrison’s third goal of the game with 2:09 left in the third period lifted the Canucks to a tie at Calgary and gave him his first hat trick.
