Once-Conjoined Egyptian Twins Making Progress

DALLAS — Two-year-old twins from Egypt who were born joined at the head and separated last month are doing well, and one is even standing up with assistance, hospital officials said Tuesday.

A team of physical therapists, speech therapists and other experts works with Ahmed and Mohamed Ibrahim twice a day, according to senior physical therapist Jacob Makkappellil at North Texas Hospital for Children at Medical City Dallas Hospital.

The boys are learning to use muscles they could not use when they were attached and unable to sit or stand. Makkappellil said Mohamed was standing with assistance and holding his head up without assistance, and that Ahmed was making steady progress in his head and body control.

Makkappellil said the boys are enjoying their therapy sessions, and laugh and play with therapists. Doctors say they are very pleased with the boys’ progress.
