Lute Olson earned his 500th victory as Arizona’s coach Monday night. This year’s Wildcats should give him quite a few more.
Channing Frye scored 20 points and Andre Iguodala had 18 to lead No. 4 Arizona to a 107-73 season-opening win over Northern Arizona at Tucson.
Isaiah Fox, suspended from the two exhibition games for stealing a candy bar and bagels from a school store, had his first career double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Olson, beginning his 21st season at Arizona, is 500-147 with the Wildcats, who have won at least 20 games for 16 consecutive seasons. The 69-year-old coach needs eight victories to reach 700 overall. His record is 692-239 at Long Beach State, Iowa and Arizona.
“I talked about when I first came I didn’t want to develop a team, I want to develop a program so we could be a competitive team every year,” Olson said. “I certainly didn’t expect that it would be the way it’s been. That’s beyond anything I would have been able to imagine.”
No. 9 North Carolina 91, Davidson 68 -- Jawad Williams scored a career-high 28 points at Charlotte, N.C., as the Tar Heels (2-0), in their second game under new Coach Roy Williams, had few problems with Davidson (0-2), which humiliated them two years ago in a 58-54 upset in Chapel Hill.
No. 11 Texas 122, Sam Houston State 71 -- Sydmill Harris scored 23 points for the Longhorns (2-0) at Austin in a rout of Sam Houston State (1-1), which lost all five starters from last season’s Southland Conference championship team.
No. 16 Gonzaga 90, Denver 68 -- Ronny Turiaf scored 21 points at Spokane, Wash., to lead the Bulldogs (2-1) to an easy win over an opponent playing its season opener.
No. 19 Cincinnati 89, Oakland (Mich.) 60 -- Jason Maxiell scored a career-high 26 points for the Bearcats, who improved to 2-0 with the home-court victory. Oakland is 2-3.
No. 21 Notre Dame 74, Northern Illinois 65 -- Torin Francis had 24 points, 19 rebounds and five blocked shots as the Fighting Irish (1-0) opened their season with a hard-earned victory over the Huskies (1-0) at South Bend, Ind.
No. 23 Marquette 70, Northern Michigan 58 -- Travis Diener scored 15 points as the Golden Eagles (4-0) defeated the Division II Wildcats (2-1) at Milwaukee. Marquette is 9-0 against Northern Michigan.
