The former head of the Miami-Dade County teachers union was sentenced to two years in prison for charging $650,000 in cruises, vacations and other luxuries to union accounts.
Pat Tornillo -- former chief of the United Teachers of Dade, the Southeast’s largest union -- acknowledged that he “stepped over the line” between personal finances and union money.
Tornillo, 78, had pleaded guilty to mail fraud and filing a false tax return. Besides the prison term, he was ordered to pay $960,000 in restitution and back taxes.
