Religious Leader With Ties to Karzai Is Slain

A Muslim religious leader close to Afghan President Hamid Karzai has been shot to death in the village of Kalacha, 90 miles north of Kandahar, officials said. Habibullah, who used one name, was killed Wednesday outside a mosque, and six people were detained for questioning, officials said.
Karzai blamed Afghanistan’s ousted Taliban regime and Al Qaeda allies. Remnants of the groups have stepped up attacks on foreigners, government officials and Karzai supporters.
