Don’t Count on Her to ‘Fold’
After a gutty win in her 3-year-old debut at Santa Anita six weeks ago, Buffythecenterfold will try to remain unbeaten at Hollywood Park in today’s $100,000 Railbird Stakes.
Owned by Frank Stronach and Brian Allen and trained by Mel Stute, the 3-year-old daughter of Capote is the 6-5 favorite -- she will race coupled with the Stronach-owned Dash For Money -- in the Grade III at seven furlongs.
In her first start since finishing seventh in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies last fall, Buffythecenterfold looked beaten in midstretch in the Santa Paula Stakes on March 23 but rallied to finish a nose in front of Watching You, trained by Stute’s older brother Warren.
In 2002, Buffythecenterfold won her first two starts in Inglewood, beating maidens at 10-1 last June 15, then taking the Landaluce Stakes, a Grade III, at nearly 7-1 less than a month later. Victor Espinoza, who had three winners on both Thursday and Friday, will again ride.
Race of the day: The ninth race at Aqueduct is a $42,000 affair for maiden fillies and mares at one mile on the turf. So, why is it significant? It’s the final race of the meet before Belmont Park begins its spring-summer meet on Wednesday. This means there is a mandatory payout in the pick six today and there’s a carry-over of more than $151,000.
One for the road: Falso Testimonio, who was disqualified on a questionable call in his last start on March 19, can make amends in today’s fourth at Aqueduct. The 5-year-old Roy horse, who has improved since being treated with Lasix two races ago, has four opponents in the $48,000 allowance at 1 1/8 miles. Mike Luzzi will ride for owner Earle Mack and trainer Bruce Levine.
Exotically speaking: A pick four using Motto, Gulchie, Deploy Venture and Dereck in the sixth, Tioga Lake and Kimon in the seventh, Buffythecenterfold-Dash For Money entry and Himalayan in the eighth and singling Romeo Tango in the ninth.
Winners: Previous day/meet total: 1/21. Money: Previous day/meet total: $3.40/$119.40. Total money bet: $156.
