Mater Dei Handles Inglewood
Santa Ana Mater Dei shook off a slow start and kept alive its quest for a fifth state championship with an 88-54 victory over Inglewood in the Southern California Regional Division II boys’ basketball championship game Saturday at Long Beach Arena.
Wesley Washington scored 19 points and the Monarchs (34-2) helped brush away bad memories of a stunning loss in the last year’s regional final against Riverside King.
Mike Gerrity and Marcel Jones each scored 15 points for Mater Dei, which plays Roseville Woodcreek (27-5) in the state final at 8 p.m. Friday at Arco Arena.
Inglewood guard Ray Reed was slowed by a slew of double-teams and scored 19 points on six-of-19 shooting for the Sentinels (26-10).
Inglewood Coach Pat Roy missed the game because of flu symptoms, he said by phone from home.
