Panel to Discuss Cleanup of MTBE at Naval Base
An advisory committee Thursday will discuss the ongoing cleanup of the toxic chemical MTBE at the Port Hueneme naval base.
The committee -- made up of community, regulatory and Navy representatives -- meets quarterly to review and discuss the environmental cleanup program at Naval Base Ventura County.
The group will report on two new “biobarriers†being installed at the base. The barriers are underground trenches into which oxygen and other substances are introduced to spur native bacteria to rid the groundwater of MTBE, a gasoline additive.
The public is invited to attend Thursday’s meeting, which will run from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Orvene Carpenter Community Center at 550 Park Ave. in Port Hueneme. For more information, call 982-2969.
