Varitek, Jenkins Win Fan Election
Boston catcher Jason Varitek and Milwaukee outfielder Geoff Jenkins won the Internet balloting for the final spots on their respective All-Star teams.
Varitek received 3,210,509 votes to beat out Frank Thomas of the Chicago White Sox, Eric Byrnes of the Oakland Athletics, Jason Giambi of the New York Yankees and Bengie Molina of the Angels for the 32nd spot on the American League team.
Giambi ended up making the team anyway. He was picked Wednesday by AL Manager Mike Scioscia as a replacement for the injured Mike Sweeney.
Jenkins received 2,872,200 votes to win the final spot on the National League team, beating out Benito Santiago of the San Francisco Giants, Kenny Lofton of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Orlando Cabrera of the Montreal Expos and Luis Castillo of the Florida Marlins.

A man accused of throwing a powerful firecracker during an Oakland Athletic game, injuring an 8-year-old boy, was ordered held on $25,000 bail.
Oakland police spokeswoman Danielle Ashford said witnesses saw the 21-year-old man toss the cherry bomb from the third deck to the first tier of bleachers in left field during the third inning of Tuesday night’s game.
The boy was burned on one of his legs and was taken to a hospital. He has since been released.
Police identified the suspect as Travares Moore. He could face charges of assault with a deadly weapon and explosion of a destructive device, police said.

The San Francisco Giants put left-hander Kirk Rueter on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained throwing shoulder.
The Giants purchased the contract of right-hander Brian Powell from triple-A Fresno to take Rueter’s place on the roster.
