Man Who Drowned in Rescue Effort Is Honored

A Korean man who died trying to save two friends in the chilly Trinity River was awarded a Carnegie Medal for heroism.
Chang-Bae Cho was visiting Kimtu Beach in July 2001 with friends when two Korean women waded out into the river. They were swept up by the current and pulled into deep water.
Witnesses said Cho couldn’t swim. But he waded into the river to help the women and also was swept up by the current.
The Carnegie Hero Fund Commission pays $3,500 to the hero or his family.
