Witness Says Defendant Admitted Role in Killing

A reputed Klansman accused of helping to kill a black sharecropper as part of an attempt to assassinate the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. admitted blowing the victim’s head off with a shotgun and bragged he would never be convicted, the prosecution’s last witness testified in Jackson.
Ernest Avants’ defense team also rested, and closing arguments were scheduled for today.
Avants, 72, is charged with participating in the 1966 killing of Ben Chester White.
