Times Earns Top 10 Honors in Contest
The Times was among five large-circulation newspapers to be named in the top 10 in daily and Sunday section categories in the annual Associated Press Sports Editors national contest that concluded Wednesday.
Three papers -- the Boston Globe, Forth Worth Star-Telegram and Minneapolis Star Tribune -- finished in the top 10 in three categories, the APSE’s triple crown. The Times received honorable mention in special sections.
Times reporters won four awards in the large-paper writing competition, including second place for enterprise to the team of Alan Abrahamson, Helene Elliott, David Wharton, Lance Pugmire, Lauren Peterson, Carol J. Williams, Randy Harvey, Larry Stewart, Peter Yoon, Bill Dwyre, Lisa Dillman, John Ortega, Mike Bresnahan and Dan Arritt.
Abrahamson earned third place for news story and Bill Shaikin was third in the game story category. Bill Plaschke received honorable mention for column writing.
The only other local writing winner in the large-paper category was the Orange County Register team of Scott Reid, Marla Jo Fisher and Natalya Shulyakousk, which was first in the investigative category. The Register got honorable mention in all three section categories.
Winners in the 100,000-250,000 circulation categories were Howard Beck of the Los Angeles Daily News, who was second in the game story competition and honorable mention for feature story; Tom Hoffarth of the Daily News, third in column writing; and Kevin Modesti of the Daily News, honorable mention in column writing.
The Riverside Press-Enterprise was top 10 in special sections in the 100,000-250,000 category and the Daily News received honorable mention for Sunday sections.
In the 40,000-100,000 circulation category, the Ventura Star was a double top-10 winner, for Sunday and special sections. Its daily efforts received honorable mention. In the same circulation category, the Palm Springs Desert Sun was top 10 for special sections and Woody Woodburn of the South Bay Daily Breeze was third in column writing.
