Mariners Score Big, Get Wild-Card Lead

The Seattle Mariners put together their biggest inning of the season Saturday.

Carlos Guillen had two doubles and three RBIs in a 10-run fifth inning, helping Gil Meche to his first win in four starts as the Mariners routed the Baltimore Orioles, 13-1, at Seattle.

The Mariners moved ahead of Boston by a half game in the American League wild-card race.

Seattle scored all 10 runs with two out, and five of the runs came after third baseman Tony Batista’s fielding error.

The Orioles committed three errors, leading to seven unearned runs, and lost their seventh in a row.

The Mariners came into the game with eight losses in 10 games, which included a season-worst six-game losing streak.

Oakland 4, Tampa Bay 2 -- Ted Lilly took a one-hitter into the seventh inning as the A’s won at Oakland for their season-high eighth straight win. Lilly (8-9) retired 11 of the first 12 batters before giving up an infield single to Aubrey Huff in the fourth as the A’s retained a two-game lead in the AL West and improved to a major league-best 19-9 in August.

Keith Foulke pitched the ninth for his AL-leading 37th save in 42 chances. Eric Chavez went two for four with two RBIs, and Scott Hatteberg hit his 11th homer for Oakland.

Minnesota 2, Texas 0 -- Johan Santana pitched six shutout innings before leaving because of a left hamstring injury and Shannon Stewart drove in two runs as the Twins won at Arlington, Texas. Santana (9-3) gave up five hits to win his sixth straight decision. Santana is 8-2 in his 13 starts this season.

Toronto 9, Cleveland 3 -- Cory Lidle (12-11) got his first win in more than a month and Frank Catalanotto hit a three-run homer to cap a four-run sixth inning for Toronto at Cleveland.
