San Francisco airport officials have announced a proposal to lower airport fees, hoping to bring more carriers -- and more customers.

If successful, the plan could translate into lower air fares and more airline choices for fliers out of San Francisco International Airport and more business for the airport, which has been suffering a travel slump since the dot-com crash and the 9/11 terrorist attacks, airport director John Martin said.

The proposal would cut landing fees for airlines that add new flights by 50% and lower operating costs of participating airlines by 2% or 3%. The Airport Commission will consider it Aug. 18.
