Akins Is Released From Hospital

Cleveland Brown safety Chris Akins was released from a hospital Saturday after being involved in a one-car accident Friday night.

“He is doing well and resting at his home with his family,” the Browns said in a statement.

The club said it would decide today whether Akins will play in its opener against Kansas City. He was listed as probable on the injury report with a neck injury.

Akins, 25, was traveling alone on southbound Interstate 71 in Ohio when his sport utility vehicle left the road at an exit ramp about 6 p.m. Friday. He was taken to a hospital and kept overnight for observation.

New York Jet Pro Bowl center Kevin Mawae agreed to a six-year contract extension reportedly worth about $24 million.

The 6-foot-4, 289-pound Mawae has started 123 consecutive games, the longest streak among current NFL centers.

A second-round selection by Seattle in 1994, Mawae played four years with the Seahawks before signing with the Jets before the 1998 season.

The New Orleans Saints and quarterback Aaron Brooks agreed to a six-year contract extension. Financial terms were not released.

Brooks, 26, had been scheduled to earn a base salary of $450,000, tying him with Washington’s Shane Matthews as the second-lowest-paid starting quarterback in the NFL.

Brooks would have been an unrestricted free agent after this season.

Baltimore and linebacker Peter Boulware agreed on a seven-year contract extension. Financial terms were not announced.

Boulware, 27, led the AFC in sacks last season with 15. He is the Ravens’ all-time leader with 52 in 80 games.

Jacksonville activated receiver Jimmy Smith and said he’ll start the opener against Indianapolis today.

Smith reported to the Jaguars last weekend after a 38-day contract holdout.
