Jones Easily Retains His Titles

Roy Jones Jr. pounded a game but badly outclassed Clinton Woods on Saturday night at Portland, Ore., to retain his undisputed light-heavyweight titles when the challenger’s corner told the referee to stop the fight at 1 minute 29 seconds of the sixth round.

Woods (32-2), who had never fought outside of England, was the World Boxing Council’s No. 1 challenger. Jones is 47-1 with 38 knockouts.

In another title fight on the undercard, Winky Wright (44-3) retained his International Boxing Federation junior-middleweight title when Bronco McKart (45-4) was disqualified because of repeated low blows in the eighth round.

Wright kept open his hopes of getting a rematch with Fernando Vargas, who beat him in December 1999 in a disputed majority decision.

Vargas is fighting Oscar De La Hoya in a super-welterweight title bout Saturday at Las Vegas.

Golf

Neal Lancaster shot a five-under-par 67 for a two-stroke lead over Greg Chalmers after three rounds of the Canadian Open at Markham.... Bob Gilder shot a seven-under 65 to take a one-stroke lead in the Kroger Senior Classic at Maineville, Ohio.... Annika Sorenstam shot a four-under 66 at Tulsa, Okla., to take a one-stroke lead after the second round of the Williams Championship.

Auto Racing

Troubled NASCAR star Tony Stewart denied a woman’s claim that he assaulted her after a race in Tennessee, saying he is “shocked and truly at a loss as to why she made the claim.”

Stewart, on NASCAR probation for punching a photographer Aug. 4 at Indianapolis, is being investigated by the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department in Tennessee after a woman accused him of shoving her after a race at Bristol Motor Speedway on Aug. 24.

Brandon Loverock of Norwalk earned his first victory this season in the 75-lap Jani-King Super Late Model/Miller Lite Big Ten Challenge series main event at Irwindale Speedway in front of 4,986.

Jess Flores won the 50-lap Southern California Auto Club Late Model series feature race, Andrew Phipps won the 40-lap Vista Paint Super Stock series feature, and Jeff Williams won the 40-lap feature race in the West Coast Pro Truck series.

Yugoslavia defeated New Zealand, 89-78, and Argentina defeated Germany, 86-80, in the semifinals of the men’s basketball World Championships at Indianapolis. The final is today.

The U.S. lost to Spain, 81-75, in the fifth-place game.
