High price of RV trips

Regarding “Behind the wheel of the RV craze� (On a Budget, Oct. 13): No doubt RVs are a delightful way to travel, but are they as economical as Arthur Frommer suggests? I asked some RVers in my area and none agrees. A typical RV gets 6 to 10 miles per gallon. With gasoline prices at $1.45 a gallon or more, the cost adds up fast. Some spend as much as $3,000 a month on the road.

It’s easier for me to fly and drive and, I think, just as economical.

Either Frommer did no research before writing the article on RVs or it was ghostwritten by an intern.

You would be hard pressed to find any worthwhile RV for $50,000. A well-equipped RV costs $150,000 to $300,000. Many exceed $1 million. Finding a campground for $10 to $20 a night is like finding a nice hotel room in Los Angeles for $50. And saying that RVs come with microwaves, air-conditioning and a propane tank is like saying a car comes equipped with wheels and a motor.
