“When I was a kid, I fantasized about this theater -- dreamed I would be discovered on this stage,†Academy Award-winning actress Diane Keaton told the 400 guests at Pasadena Playhouse’s 5th annual Theatre de la Gala. “It is a national treasure.†Sharing the spotlight with Lyla White, Playhouse executive director, Keaton welcomed theater buffs to the Oct. 19 soiree structured like a three-act play.

First up: a buffet out on El Molino Avenue, in front of the 78-year-old landmark, with fine wines and fare ranging from sand dabs tempura-style to brie en croute. Next: an onstage tribute to David Davis, outgoing Playhouse board chairman, which included Tournament of Roses Queen Carolina Hsu presenting him with a floral spray. Finally, after intermission, during which guests again took to the street for java and desserts: Emmy Award-winning screenwriter Peter Tolan’s original production of “Musical Madness,†a hilarious sendup inspired by great books, such as “The Iliad†(a la Kander & Ebb) and “Metamorphosis†(a la Irving Berlin). “Tonight, Broadway came to Pasadena,†White said.
