Lightning Flips Power Switch
The Tampa Bay Lightning is off to an outstanding start thanks to a dangerous power play.
Martin St. Louis scored twice and Tampa Bay got three power-play goals Monday night in a 4-2 victory over the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden.
Vaclav Prospal and Ben Clymer also scored for the surprising Lightning, off to the best start in franchise history at 4-0-1. Nikolai Khabibulin made 18 saves.
The Lightning has scored on the power play in every game this season.
“We just brought the puck to the net,†St. Louis said. “You score one and it gives you confidence.â€
Mark Messier and Rem Murray scored for the Rangers, who had their three-game unbeaten streak ended. They had only three power plays to Tampa Bay’s eight.
Tampa Bay’s Vincent Lecavalier was scratched because of a knee sprain and is expected to be sidelined 10 to 14 days. Lecavalier was injured in Saturday night’s tie at Pittsburgh. He has three goals and four assists in four games.
Detroit 4, Calgary 0 -- Curtis Joseph made 24 saves for his first shutout with Detroit and the 37th of his career, and the host Red Wings scored two short-handed goals in the second period.
Boston 4, Toronto 1 -- Jozef Stumpel had a goal and two assists, Steve Shields made 33 saves, and the Bruins completed their season-opening trip at 4-1-1.
Vancouver 5, San Jose 2 -- Markus Naslund scored three goals during the Canucks’ five-goal outburst in the first 7:14 of the second period at San Jose.
Florida 3, Atlanta 2 -- Kristian Huselius scored two goals, including the game-winner with 1:27 left in the third period at Sunrise, Fla.

St. Louis defenseman Chris Pronger underwent a third surgery on his left wrist and will be sidelined indefinitely.... Florida defenseman Lance Ward was suspended by the league for one game without pay for elbowing Columbus forward Tyler Wright on Saturday.
