I’d like to thank Bob Toledo for teaching me how to beat traffic. For 25-plus years of going to UCLA games, I never left a game early before last year, but when the team quit on Toledo, my friends and I were gone from the Coliseum early in the fourth quarter.

This year, with what has become the annual humiliation at the hands of USC, I was home in time to see UCLA score the two touchdowns in garbage time. Thanks for the help, “Coach.â€

I am a Bruin fan and, needless to say, last Saturday was tough for Bruin fans. There are many reasons why teams win and why teams lose, but coaching cannot be underestimated as one of the most important ingredients for success. Look what Pete Carroll has done with primarily Paul Hackett’s class. Look what Tyrone Willingham has accomplished at Notre Dame with his predecessor’s class. It gets you thinking.

“And everyone thought I was unprepared!â€

George Armstrong Custer after witnessing the 2002 UCLA-USC football game.

Once can be a fluke, twice can be a coincidence. Three times is a trend. More than three is time for a change. Bob Toledo has been completely unprepared for nearly every big game UCLA has had in the past five years. Miami (1998), USC (four years running), multiple bowl losses to inferior teams and second-half season collapses.

Help us, Dan Guerrero.

USC fans can now speak about Bob Toledo in the same hushed and reverent tones with which we recall Pepper Rodgers. He’s moving ever closer to the title of the “Best UCLA Coach That USC Ever Had.â€

I am going to send my ticket to the Washington State game back to Dan Guerrero with a letter pleading for Bob Toledo to be fired. Maybe a stadium of empty seats will get the message across. Bob Toledo must go!

The UCLA-USC debacle only enhanced the stature of such fine young men as USC’s Carson Palmer and Troy Polamalu. Conversely, it also further diminished the legacy of UCLA when Tyler Ebell -- whose team trailed, 52-7, until the final minutes -- groused that the Trojan defense was “OK†but overrated.

Could it possibly be that the “gutty little Bruins†of yesteryear have devolved into the “nutty little Bruins

Bob Toledo and T.J. Simers -- towering pillars of the Bruin community. It is everyone’s hope that their respective employers will do everything possible to retain their invaluable services. Their partnership in support of UCLA football has long been an endless source of pleasure for USC fans everywhere.

Ever since T.J. Simers started bashing USC athletics, the program keeps getting better and better. I’m not canceling my subscription.

Listen up Trojan fans, I’ve got two predictions for you. No. 1 is the UCLA football team is going to “tank†it on Dec. 7 against Washington State. The Bruins, after being humiliated by the Trojans, are not about to do them any favors.

Prediction No. 2 is that Carson Palmer, while a very good quarterback, will finish third in the Heisman race behind Miami’s Ken Dorsey and Iowa’s Brad Banks. Bet the mortgage on both predictions.
