Diversity Day

Even though your Oct. 26 news brief, “Parents Angered by Lesbian’s Talk at School,” regarding Diversity Day at Goleta Valley Junior High School, was small, the issue it raised is not. Californians live in one of the most diverse communities in the world. In her wisdom, the principal decided to teach the students about many different kinds of people they encounter each day. I was horrified that she buckled under pressure from a conservative group of parents and agreed to send a letter of apology to parents for failing to notify them of one particular speaker. The fact that the speaker was a lesbian does not excuse this type of behavior.
