Peasant Interlude

From “Little House on the Prairie” innocence to sexy ethnic chic, you’re sure to see the peasant look everywhere in the next few months. Why not? A spring trend that’s sure to rise with the temperatures, it’s a relaxed way to look and stay cool--especially for women with less than bikini-ready bods.
L.A. stores are literally bursting with variations. From $126 styles at Betsey Johnson boutiques to $40 renditions at Urban Outfitters to $20 styles at chains like Wet Seal, there’s a bevy of billowy tops and dresses for every budget.
Higher-end interpretations can be found at pricey shops such as Fred Segal, where a colorfully stitched hippie-esque blouse with gathered waist and sleeves by Marc Jacobs goes for $175. A more intricate evening style with cutouts and beading by Chloe runs $400.
But those of us who earn peasant-level wages can afford the romantic frocks too. Nearly every rack at low-end trendy mall emporium Forever 21 is filled with puffy sleeves, ruffles, drawstring necks and floral prints in beat-the-heat fabrics such as gauzy thin cotton. A top nearly identical to the $175 Marc Jacobs one cost $16.99.
For a more authentic style, head to Olvera Street, where beautifully embroidered pieces can be found at stores such as Olverita’s Village and Artes Andinas for muy caliente prices: $20
to $30.
