Hundreds of Bent Nails Found in Park
Several hundred bent nails were found Thursday in a Santa Ana park, and investigators are trying to determine if they were simply discarded or left there to harm people.
Police Sgt. Baltazar De La Riva said park workers discovered the nails on a hiking and bike path.
The nails were attached in strands for use in a nail gun, he said, and were covered by leaves and debris. The strands ranged in length from a few inches to a few feet, he said.
The pointed ends of some of the nails were up, De La Riva said.
“They were also bent and twisted in a manner that indicated they were to be discarded, or to purposely expose the pointed end of the nails.â€
No nails were found in the adjacent areas of the park, including the children’s playground, De La Riva said.
In the last three weeks, nails and razor blades have been found in at least five parks and playgrounds in south Orange County.
De La Riva said police will compare notes with Orange County sheriff’s investigators, who are working on the other cases, to try to determine if the incidents are related.
