Some PR for ‘Z-Boys’
I liked Kenneth Turan’s review of “Dogtown and the Z-Boys,” except for the part where he was putting down the Z-boys for bragging about themselves (“‘Dogtown and Z-Boys’ revisits a legacy of agility and attitude,” April 26). Turan missed a critical point.
When you’re a part of some group like “skaters” or “bikers” that is mostly dismissed as trash by the mainstream, you have to brag for yourself. Nobody else is gonna do it for you.
So you get a little over the top. Since when is self-promotion a sin in L.A.?
