Legislator Resigns Amid Bookkeeping Scandal

A popular Japanese lawmaker known for her dogged attacks on scandal-tainted foes gave up her seat in parliament after being ensnared in a bookkeeping scandal, an official said.
Kiyomi Tsujimoto, a leading member of the opposition Social Democratic Party, was under fire over financial irregularities at her office. She submitted her resignation in the lower house of parliament after informing party leader Takako Doi, said parliamentary official Satoru Matsuzaki.
Tsujimoto, 41, known for her harsh criticism of ruling party corruption, apologized for betraying the public’s trust.
