Running back Garrison Hearst agreed Wednesday to a $20-million, six-year contract to remain with the San Francisco 49ers.

Hearst, 31, rushed for 1,206 yards in an amazing return to the NFL last season after sitting out the previous two years because of complications from a broken ankle.

The 49ers never released Hearst after his injury in a January 1999 playoff game, and Hearst acknowledged their loyalty by returning despite interest from several teams.

“I consider myself a 49er, and this means I’ll probably finish my career there, which is a great thing,†Hearst said. “The team supported me through some tough times. They’ve been very good to me, and I’m thrilled to be able to stay.â€

In a comeback that surprised almost everyone, Hearst was the NFL’s 10th-leading rusher last season, with four 100-yard games.

Bill Callahan, promoted from offensive coordinator to coach by the Oakland Raiders, said he doesn’t plan to change much of the system Jon Gruden presided over during the last four years as Raider coach.

“Jon and I are very similar in a lot of respects--our work ethic, our intensity,†said Callahan, who has never been a head coach at any level. “The system itself will not change. The day-to-day functions will not change.â€

As a sign of who holds the real power on the Raiders, team owner Al Davis sat on a silver and black armchair--which looked very much like a throne--during the news conference announcing Callahan’s promotion. Callahan sat on a black and white folding chair.
