35 Killed When Bus Crashes Into Gas Station
A bus skidded off a fog-shrouded highway in Peru and slammed into a gas station, bursting into flames and killing at least 35 people while injuring 18, police said.
The bus was coming from Ayacucho, a city in the Andes 200 miles southeast of Lima, the capital, when it crashed in the coastal town of Chincha, policeman Emilio Merino said.
The 27-year-old driver lost control after he slammed on the brakes to avoid an oncoming car, Merino said. Police were searching for the car.
The bus driver’s 14-year-old assistant told reporters that the driver was “half asleep†seconds before the accident, Merino said.
Police detained the bus driver while the investigation is ongoing.
