Budget Cuts Enacted Over Gov. Ventura Veto

A plan to cut nearly $2 billion from the state’s deficit by slashing spending and dipping into reserves went into law after the state Senate, with little fanfare, overrode Gov. Jesse Ventura’s veto, 60 to 7.
The House overrode the bill with a 99-33 vote, easily more than the 90 votes--two-thirds majority--required for an override.
Ventura had vetoed the bill Monday, saying it puts too much of the burden on spending cuts. His plan would have raised gas and cigarette taxes and cut state payments to local governments. It would have also cut some programs and used some reserves.
