Haggin Is Shaping Up
Three races into his career, Crowned Dancer can become the first double stakes winner among local 2-year-olds this afternoon at Hollywood Park.
Owned by a partnership that includes Charles Cono and Eastern Sky Unlimited Trust and trained by Chris Paasch, the son of Tactical Advantage will try for his second victory in three weeks in the $75,000 Haggin Stakes.
Crowned Dancer, who was purchased for $225,000 earlier this year in Florida, was a troubled second in his debut on May 8. He dominated his six rivals in the Willard Proctor Memorial on May 26, winning by five lengths and completing the five furlongs in 57 4/5seconds.
The chestnut colt is the 3-5 morning line choice in the Haggin, which is 5 1/2 furlongs. He will break from post four in the field of six after the scratch of Maui Wish. Alex Solis, who rode him for the first time in the Proctor, has the mount again today.
Trainer Mike Harrington, who has unleased a slew of 2-year-old winners by sire Swiss Yodeler at the meet, will send out two of those horses in the Haggin--Luzern and Oberwald.
Because both are owned by Heinz Steinmann, Luzern and Oberwald will race coupled in the wagering. The entry is the 3-1 second on Russ Hudak’s line.
Meanwhile, Bay Meadows will conclude its meet and there is a mandatory payout in the pick six, which has a carryover of $90,181.
The main event is also a stakes for 2-year-olds. Banshee King, an eight-length winner in his first start over the track on May 27, is the likely favorite in the $55,000 Malcolm Anderson at five furlongs.
Race of the day: The fifth at Hollywood Park offers a well-matched field of older California-bred fillies and mares going 1 1/16 miles on the turf. There are few throwouts in the field of 12.
Who’s hot: Marcelo Polanco. The trainer, who had only one winner through the first six months plus of the year, had two victories Friday night. He won with maidens Lillie Lane and Special Willy.
Who’s not: Jim Chapman. The trainer, who will send out 2-1 favorite Stormented in the fourth, is three of 53 this year.
Exotically speaking: Exacta boxes in the sixth keying Jim’s Relaunch with Mr. Reed, Jack’s Ole’ and Crafty Dutchman.
Winners: Previous day/meet total: 3/104. Money: Previous day/meet total: $17/$596.40. Total money bet: $672.
