City Celebrates Demise of L.A. Stadium Proposal
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Officials and civic activists are happy at the withdrawal of an effort by a Denver billionaire to build a football stadium in downtown Los Angeles and possibly lure the Chargers away from San Diego.
“This is a very positive thing for San Diego,†said City Atty. Casey Gwinn, who had sent a letter to the Philip Anschutz group threatening to sue if the group attempted to negotiate with the Chargers.
“This sends a clear message to Los Angeles: Don’t mess with San Diego,†said Councilman Byron Wear.
