Washington Upsets California

C.J. Massingale matched a career high with 25 points to give the Washington Huskies a 75-60 upset victory over California on Saturday night at Seattle.

With Arizona losing earlier in the day, a victory by the Bears, 18-6 overall and 9-5 in the Pac-10, would have given them a share of first place with four games remaining before the conference tournament. Instead, California is tied for fifth with UCLA.

Washington (9-16, 3-12) led 38-33 after Massingale scored the Huskies’ first seven points of the second half, but the Bears responded with a 12-0 run that gave them a 45-38 advantage with 14:13 left in the game.

The Huskies regained the lead at 53-51 on a three-point basket by Curtis Allen with 9:06 to play. From that point, Washington never trailed.

Allen put the game away by scoring the Huskies’ last eight points on free throws in the final minute. Allen finished with 12 points.

Doug Wrenn, Washington’s top scorer, did not make a field goal until 7:15 was left in the game and finished with only six points.

Joe Shipp had 15 points for Cal, which failed to post its first five-game conference winning streak since it won six in a row in 1997.

Washington is ninth in the conference, a half game behind Oregon State. The Huskies play the Beavers on Thursday in a game will help determine which team gets the eighth and last spot in the conference tournament.

No. 12 Stanford 76, Washington State 63--Curtis Borchardt had 19 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks, and the Cardinal (17-6, 10-4) began the second half with a 17-5 run that shook off the Cougars (5-18, 1-14) at Pullman, Wash.

Stanford got 24 points from Casey Jacobsen, which helped negate a 29-point effort from Washington State’s Marcus Moore.

Moore was four for seven from three-point range with 18 points in the first half.

Stanford took its first lead at 24-21 on a three-pointer by Julius Barnes with 8:17 remaining in the first half.

The Cardinal led by three points at halftime, then used the run to pull away to a 54-39 advantage early in the second half. Stanford held Washington State to one for six shooting during the run, and parlayed that into its 12th consecutive victory in the series.

Washington State closed within 71-61 on Moore’s jumper with 2:54 remaining, but Barnes answered with a 3-point shot on Stanford’s ensuing possession to end the Cougars’ final threat.

Jacobsen had 13 points in the second half and Borchardt had 10.

The loss was the 15th in 16 games for Washington State.

No. 17 Oregon 91, Oregon State 62--Frederick Jones had 23 points, Luke Ridnour scored 20 and Luke Jackson had 19 as the Ducks (18-7, 10-4) moved into a three-way tie for first place with Stanford and USC.

Oregon’s conference record is its best since 1975-76.

The Ducks also improved to 14-0 at McArthur Court--their best home start since 1937-38, when they went 16-0.

Philip Ricci had 20 points and nine rebounds for Oregon State (10-14, 3-11).

The Ducks defeated the Beavers for the eight time in a row and 17th time in 18 games. Oregon last lost to Oregon State at home in 1992.

The 29-point victory tied the largest margin of victory by the Ducks in the series, equaling a 42-13 win on Feb. 11, 1921.

Oregon State used a 21-10 run to close within 28-25 with 6:10 left in the first half. But Oregon closed out the first half with a 17-2 run and led 45-27.The Ducks used a 22-4 run to extend their lead to 69-36 eight minutes into the second half. With 6:35 remaining, Anthony Lever made a three-pointer to give Oregon an 82-45 lead--its largest of the game.
