3rd Recipient of AbioCor Artificial Heart Dies

The maker of a self-contained artificial heart said that the third person to receive an implant has died in a Texas hospital.
Bobby Harrison, 69, died at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital in Houston after having the AbioCor replacement heart implanted Sept. 26, Abiomed Inc., based in Danvers, Mass., said in a statement.
Harrison, who suffered a stroke Feb. 1, was one of six people to receive the grapefruit-size plastic and titanium heart.
The last person to die after receiving an artificial heart was a 74-year-old man at UCLA Medical Center. He was never identified.
