Unkempt Stores a Source of Kmart’s Problems

“Kmart Seeks Bankruptcy Protection” [Jan. 23] states that Kmart Corp. blamed its bankruptcy on increased competition, poor sales, the recession and lack of support from vendors.
Let’s see, not one word about customer satisfaction or employee morale.
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out why customers go elsewhere: dirty and litter-strewn parking lots, filthy shopping carts, disorganized shelving, no price tags and the absence of staff assistance.
One would think Kmart was a governmental social service department.
Well-trained employees who keep their workplace clean and organized result in happy customers who return and spend money.
