Jones Doubles His Pleasure, Breaks Record
There was more to Paul Jones’ weekend than a victory with Whosleavingwho in the $500,000 Champion of Champions on Saturday night.
Less than 24 hours later, Los Alamitos’ leading trainer scored a record-setting victory with Agouti in the $163,450 Southern California Derby.
Jones’ second Grade I victory in as many nights was his 164th win of the meet overall, breaking his record of 163 in 2001.
Owned and bred by longtime Jones client Joe Bettencourt, Agouti beat favored Harley Man in the Derby. Ridden by Ramon Sanchez, the 3-year-old Corona Cartel gelding completed the 400 yards in 19.40 seconds, which is 0.06 of a second off the track record established by Takin On The Cash more than 12 years ago.
This was the sixth victory in 20 starts for Agouti, who paid $7.80 as the 5-2 second choice in the field of 10.
The picks: 1. Fuddy Buddy. 2. A Tiny Bit More. 3. Ashlander. 4. Call Him Quick. 5. Legal Thief. 6. Momma Is A Moviestar. 7. Pastures New. 8. Jazzing High Five.
