A 14-month-old boy was critically hurt in Pacoima on Thursday when an alleged drunk driver hopped a curb and struck a heavy steel-mesh trash can that flew into a group of people waiting for a bus.
The boy and his mother, who was also seriously injured, were flown to UCLA Medical Center. The hospital did not release information about their conditions.
Another woman suffered minor injuries in the 5:25 p.m. accident and was taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills.
Police said Jose Maldonado, 66, of Los Angeles was traveling 45 to 50 mph when he drove over the curb near Glenoaks Boulevard and Osborne Street. He continued driving for about 50 feet before hitting the can, they said.
Maldonado was being held at Van Nuys jail in lieu of $50,000 bail on suspicion of felony drunk driving, police said.
