Lake Level Prompts Evacuation of 600,000

Chinese authorities have evacuated 600,000 people from around the dangerously swollen Dongting Lake in Hunan province as more than 1 million people piled sandbags and checked for breaches along its hundreds of miles of embankments, state media said.
The embankments protect millions of people from inundation. Floods in the province had already killed at least 16 people, the China Daily reported, without elaboration. It said 27,000 houses had collapsed.
The crisis point is expected Sunday, when a flood crest surging down the Yangtze River sweeps into Dongting, which is already 9 feet above flood warning level.
