Lower Bail Denied for Rape Suspect Luster

A Ventura County Superior Court judge Wednesday refused to lower the $1-million bail for cosmetics company heir Andrew Luster, who is accused of drugging and raping three women at his seaside home.
Luster, 38, free on bail but confined to his Mussel Beach home, also asked Judge Bruce Clark for permission to leave his residence so he could meet with his attorneys. Clark denied the request.
Clark said if Luster wants to change the terms of his bail, he should take it up with the 2nd District Court of Appeal, which set his bail in December 2000 after Luster challenged the original $10-million amount.
Luster, great-grandson of cosmetics magnate Max Factor, was arrested two years ago on suspicion of using a date rape drug known as GHB to sedate women and then sexually assault them.
His trial is scheduled to begin Oct. 28.
