Two Is Lonely Number

Maybe Groom On The Run or Slippery When Bet can be the first two-time winner at Del Mar.

They’re matched against each other in today’s seventh, a 1 1/16-mile turf allowance for California-breds.

Owned by Kirk and Judy Robison and trained by Dean Greenman, Groom On The Run used a strong late rally to win at today’s distance on the grass by 1 1/2 lengths on July 31. It was the second win in seven starts for the 3-year-old gray son of Runaway Groom. He will again be ridden by Alex Solis.

Slippery When Bet, a 4-year-old Russian Courage gelding, had won six days earlier at 1 1/16 miles on the dirt. The 5-2 second choice, he prevailed by a neck over California Goal and it was eight lengths back to third-place finisher Delong.

Race of the day: California shipper Boozin’ Susan will make her first start for trainer Linda Rice in today’s eighth at Saratoga. The 3-year-old French Deputy filly had a bullet drill over the track (47 flat on Aug. 2) and will be ridden by Jose Santos in the allowance race at six furlongs.

Who’s hot: Russell Baze. The country’s winningest rider in 2002 began the Bay Meadows Fair meet by winning with four of his seven mounts.

Who’s not: Victor Navarro. The jockey finished Santa Rosa with only one win from 30 mounts.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Runaway Rubi, Rmisvesta and Bruheria in the sixth, singling Groom On The Run in the seventh and using Bet On Brad, Classic Run, Burning Bay, Sarah’s Beau and Fight For Freedom in the eighth.
