China’s Heir Apparent Begins Visit to U.S.

Chinese Vice President Hu Jintao, expected to become his nation’s next leader, called for the U.S.-China friendship to “last forever.â€
As Hu began his first official visit to the United States in Honolulu, leaders from Hawaii Chinese organizations waved American and Chinese flags to greet him.
Hu is to fly to New York today and is to meet with President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney in Washington. He is expected to replace Jiang Zemin as the Communist nation’s president next spring.
