Shields May Not Return

Mighty Duck goalie Steve Shields hasn’t played since suffering a concussion April 3, and it’s unclear whether Shields will play for the Ducks next season. The development of Jean-Sebastien Giguere into one of the top goalies in the NHL has relegated Shields to a back-up role. Shields is paid $2 million, a bit pricey for a No. 2 goalie, and will be a restricted free agent after the season.

If defenseman Keith Carney, recovering from a deep cut on his elbow, doesn’t return to the lineup Friday against Colorado, the Ducks likely will import defenseman Aris Brimanis from minor league Cincinnati.
Defenseman Oleg Tverdovsky is unlikely to play because of a strained groin.
