Former Union Official Charged With Fraud

A former labor union pension fund administrator has been charged with fraud in connection with the fund’s $33-million investment in a former Carson landfill site, the U.S. attorney’s office said Tuesday.
William L. Seay, 71, former administrator of the Southern California and Arizona Glaziers, Architectural Metal and Glass Workers Pension Fund, pleaded not guilty to the charges in Los Angeles federal court.
Prosecutors said that Seay, who lives in Bel-Air, deceived the pension fund, its trustees and auditors about the value of the 157-acre property near the junction of the Harbor and San Diego freeways.
Plans called for developing the property into a retail outlet mall. But Seay failed to disclose his personal stake in the site, the U.S. attorney’s office said.
U.S. District Judge Edward Rafeedie has set a June 4 trial date.
