Loss Was a Fitting Postscript for Hoosiers

Indiana learned something in the NCAA championship game. No matter how many times you watch the movie “Hoosiers,� it always turns out the same way. Real life doesn’t always behave like a movie script.

Maryland might have learned something too. There is no such thing as a jinx.

The Times’ Robyn Norwood had it right (March 29), when she noted, “If [Bobby Knight] doesn’t congratulate his former players next week, any future talk of loyalty should be met with skepticism.�

Although Knight has tried to take credit for Indiana reaching this year’s championship game (he recruited most of the players), his recent coaching record belies such a claim. In five of his last seven tournament appearances, Knight has failed to get past the first game, losing to such non-powerhouses as Colorado, Boston College and Pepperdine.

And even with a new school and a fresh mandate, this season was no different. Knight’s Texas Tech team lost in the opening round to underdog Southern Illinois.

So, Bobby, before you try to diminish what Mike Davis has accomplished with his Indiana squad, you might want to go back to the drawing board and figure out how to reach the Sweet 16.

Maybe ask Steve Lavin. He’s done it five of his last six tries.
