No. 23 Long Beach Jordan (1-1) vs. No. 5 Anaheim Esperanza (3-0) at Placentia Valencia High, Friday, 7 p.m.
This is the first week that Esperanza hasn’t played a defending section champion, having beaten Upland (Southern Section Division II), Paso Robles (Division X) and Fallbrook (San Diego Section Division I). All those victories were on the road, and Esperanza has the reputation that Jordan Coach Willie Giullory wants for his team. To get it, the No. 23 Panthers are going to have to break a three-year losing streak in the series. With quick players at the skill positions and a spread offense, Jordan can pressure Esperanza to match up one-on-one.

Manhattan Beach Mira Costa (2-0) at Lawndale Leuzinger (1-1-1), Friday, 7 p.m.
The Bay League kicks off with an intriguing matchup. Mira Costa, a Division III finalist last season, is the defending league champion. Leuzinger is coming off a victory over Los Alamitos, one of the top programs in Southern California. Ball control will likely play a major role in the outcome of the game.
