Drive and Save Money

The wine country in the Livermore, Calif., area is wonderful, and I applaud your choice of destination. (“In Livermore, Singing Que Syrah, Syrah,” Weekend Escape, Aug. 26).
However, I have a suggestion: Drive, don’t fly. You’ll save $250 to $300 (for air fare for two and a car rental) and lose at most an hour or so, while having the convenience of your own car in Livermore.
We have often driven the 335 miles from the Glendale area to Livermore. It takes about five hours each way and costs $50 for fuel, round trip. I estimate that if we flew from the Burbank airport, our travel time would be nearly the same--if, like the writer, it took us two hours to drive from the Oakland airport to Livermore in rush-hour traffic.
