23 Killed in Fighting Along Cease-Fire Line
The insurgency in India’s northern state of Jammu and Kashmir claimed at least 23 lives, including 14 suspected rebels shot to death by Indian soldiers while trying to cross from Pakistan, authorities said.
“Security forces foiled three infiltration bids along the Line of Control overnight and killed 14 terrorists at Congdor, Pharkian Gali and Tangdhar areas,†an army spokesman said, referring to incidents that occurred Wednesday night.
The 470-mile Line of Control, or cease-fire line, divides Kashmir between archfoes India and Pakistan. Indian police also killed three militants in another gun battle in southern Kashmir, police said. Five civilians and a militant also were killed in separate shootouts across the state.
