Rosemead 42, Arroyo 7--Mike Gomez rushed for 332 yards and five touchdowns as host Rosemead defeated Arroyo in a Mission League game for the first time since 1992.
The 5-foot-6, 165-pound senior carried 27 times and scored on runs of 45, 81, 95, two and eight yards. Gomez scored three third-quarter touchdowns as Rosemead (6-2, 3-0) put the game out of reach with 21 points in the third quarter.
Quarterback Josh Vazquez connected with Joey Ray on a 69-yard scoring pass play in the first quarter. Rosemead amassed 454 yards. Arroyo had 295.
Arroyo (3-5, 2-0) won 27 consecutive league games before losing last year to Gabrielino. The last time the Panthers defeated Arroyo, current Rosemead Coach Matt Koffler was a junior quarterback in the 19-15 victory.
With no seniors in its backfield, Arroyo is rebuilding. Junior tailback Martin Mares carried 23 times for 163 yards and scored a touchdown from two yards out with four minutes remaining in the game. Junior Anthony Olivas added 96 yards in 20 carries.
